Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Chier Mt., about 5 km northwest of Xiangquan Town, Hexian County, Anhui. It was named by Zhu Sen in 1931.


Lithology and Thickness

Dolomitic Limestone. Gray-yellow and gray thin- to thick-bedded bioclastic powder-crystal dolomitic limestone and powder-crystal clayey dolomitic limestone, intercalated with marl and calcareous shale in the lower part. Thickness 1.5−18 m.

Drilling data of the coastal area of northern Jiangsu reveal that this formation is composed of marl in the lower part and siltstone and fine-grained sandstone in the upper part.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Gaolishan Fm

Upper contact

Disconformable contact with the overlying Laohudong Fm

Regional extent

Distributed in coastal Jiangsu, the Ningzhen Mts., and Hexian, Hanshan, Wuwei, Chaoxian, Huaining, etc. of northern Anhui. The horizon corresponds to the Shangsi Fm at Dushan Mt. of Guizhou.

Fossils

Drilling data of the coastal area of northern Jiangsu yielded Fusulinid Eostaffella hohsienica zone, corals Yuanophyllum kansuense-Lithostration irregulare assemblage, and Brachiopods Gigantoproductus giganteus-Kansuella maxima assemblage.
